Understanding the role of the aesthetic principle in the development of a harmonious person, in the 70s the Institute’s leadership made a decision to design a unified comprehensive project aimed to decorate the Institute’s premises. To implement this project, on the second floor of the main building the artist O.P. Filatchev created the magnificent painting called “Students”, which is nowadays included in UNESCO catalogs as a monumental painting of the second half of the 20th century, as well as in the Cultural Heritage Register of Moscow. The wall painting consists of five compositions – “Entering the Institute”, “The Laboratory”, “The Meeting of the Department”, “The Lecture” and “The Library”. Among the figures of the central composition “The Meeting of the Department”, the author depicted I.M. Gubkin.
