The Mineralogical and Petrographic Museum was founded in 1940 at the initiative of L.V. Pustovalov. During the Great Patriotic War, the Museum exposition was lost. The modern exposition of the Mineralogical and Petrographic Museum at the Department of Lithology of Gubkin University was opened at the initiative of the Rector A.I. Vladimirov on 19 May 2000. The Museum was named after the outstanding scientist, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, professor L.V. Pustovalov, who was one of the founders of the study of sedimentary strata and deposits of sedimentary minerals.

The Day of Oil and Gas Industry Workers is celebrated annually on the first Sunday of September. It is a professional day for geologists, drillers, developers, construction and transport workers, technologists – everyone who is connected professionally with the oil and gas industry. Traditionally, teams representing the fuel and energy sector compete for Gubkin University Football Cup this day. The Foundation of Gubkin University Alumni organizes the football tournament. In 2019, the winner of the Cup was a team of the University graduates.

Professor A.I. Melik-Shakhnazarov was the leading specialist in information and measuring equipment, whose scientific, pedagogical and social life was closely connected with the oil and gas instrument engineering, the challenges of automation of the oil and gas industry. Being the head of the Department of Electronics and Information and Measuring Technology in 1971 – 1986 (nowadays the Department of Information and Measuring Systems), he launched extensive research on the development of information and measurement systems for cluster directional drilling of slant, which led to the development of a number of original computerized information and measurement systems introduced at the first Kola Superdeep Borehole. The continuation of this work led to the development of well control systems during drilling.

The fractional content of oil and oil products demonstrates the content of various fractions boiling in certain temperature ranges. This indicator is of great practical importance. The process of separating oil into fractions is carried out at oil refineries by fractional distillation in special distillation columns.

Its construction is an intermediate step in the process of determining the mechanical characteristics of materials (mainly metals). The samples of standard sizes are fixed in special testing machines and stretched to their complete destruction. In this case, special tools record the dependence of the absolute elongation of the sample on the direct-axis tensile pull applied to it, and the recorder draws a curve characteristic of this material.

The Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering of Gubkin University was established in 1962 as the Faculty of Radio Electronics and Automation of Moscow Institute of Petrochemical and Gas Industry named after Ivan Gubkin. Today, the Faculty has 7 departments. Mathematical and computer modeling, design and effective use of computer technology, information, measuring and electrical systems and complexes, aids and systems of automation and control are the major areas of study at the Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering. The Faculty keeps and develops the traditions laid down by N.P. Buslenko, A.G. Mamikonov, M.V. Meerov, A.M. Melik-Shakhnazarov, P.M. Belash, O.L. Shishkin.

Who is chosen during the annual Miss University contest?

Miss University – Oil Queen has been traditionally held at Gubkin University since 1998. This is one of the most visited, popular and long-anticipated events. Annually, it attracts numerous spectators, including students and faculty members who come to cheer for a representative of their faculty since the winner of the contest will become the University’s image for the upcoming year and will represent the University at various events. The event partners and sponsors are representatives of leading oil and gas and companies, successful businessmen, graduates of Gubkin University as well as representatives of legislative and executive authorities.

Today about 40% of the total number of the University students are women. In 1930, only 9% of the total number of students were female students of the Oil Faculty at Moscow Mining Academy, in 1931 – 20% of female students at Moscow Oil Institute named after I.M. Gubkin, and in 1934 – almost 30%. Professor T.A. Lapinskaya, the outstanding scientist, Head of the Department of Petrography and Geochemistry of Sedimentary Rocks (nowadays the Department of Lithology) in 1960 – 1974 is widely known as the founder of the only scientific school in the world aimed to study the foundation of oil and gas areas in order to clarify its structure and history of geological development. In 1968, Professor G.L. Govorova became the first woman in our country to defend her doctoral dissertation in oil field development.
