At the beginning of the XXI century, Gubkin University set new goals: conducting fundamental and applied research, developing new technology projects, solving educational issues related to preparation of educational technologies that could integrate into the educational process. The work of the newly established departments and research centers reflected the challenges put forward by time.
The University has entered the XXI century with experience in market conditions, established vital connections with the industry, state and private enterprises and firms.
Today, Gubkin University functions as a center of the oil and gas education and science, provides training on the entire technological chain of the oil and gas complex and develops scientific and methodological support based on the challenges faced by the industry.

In 2007 the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan initiated the establishment of a branch of Gubkin University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
In 2008 Professor Viktor Martynov, a graduate of Moscow Institute of Petrochemical and Gas Industry named after Ivan Gubkin, was elected to be the rector of Gubkin University.

In 2010 the University, among 29 other Russian universities, received the status of the National Research University.
As part of its implementation program, the following priority areas for the development of the National Research University were determined: energy efficiency and energy saving in development and use of hydrocarbon resources; buildup of the resource base for the fuel and energy complex – exploration and development of hydrocarbon fields on the shelf, hard-to-recover deposits and unconventional sources of hydrocarbons; environmental and industrial safety of oil and gas production.

The research work is carried out in 12 laboratories of the University, which have turned into industry-wide centers in the relevant areas of oil and gas science. The expansion of international economic cooperation in the oil and gas sector led in 2011 to the establishment of a new faculty at the University – the Faculty of International Energy Business.

By the decree of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on 31 March 2010, Gubkin University was awarded the Order of Labor Glory of the 3d degree.

Since 2010 the University has been the coordinator of the technological platform "Technologies for the production and use of hydrocarbons". The platform participants included over 220 organizations – all oil and gas universities, oil and gas and service companies that joined together to carry out technological modernization of the Russian economy, as well as to design scientific, technical and innovative policies in the field of hydrocarbon production and use. In 2012 the National Institute of Oil and Gas was established to manage the technological platform.

Today, the University is equipped with high-tech specialized classrooms, elements of virtual environment are being actively introduced in education.
In 2008 the University launched the Center for field development control – a unique multidisciplinary computer simulator for studying the reservoir system and managing field development. In 2017 the Center was re-equipped with the financial support of LUKOIL.

Virtual oil refinery
In 2008 the Virtual Oil and Gas Refining Complex was launched with the sponsorship of Honeywell company. The Complex imitates computerized workplaces of specialists involved in the refinery, allows to simulate the work of the enterprise, teach students the basic principles of process control, conduct advanced training classes with operators, engineers and employees of enterprises and companies.
In 2013 a full-scale dispatch simulator for controlling long-distance pipelines was set at the University. The software and computer systems of the simulator are constantly being improved to solve the dispatch tasks of controlling hydrocarbon transport.

In 2017 the Offshore Drilling Center was opened at the University with the financial support of Rosneft. The Center is the only corporate center in the country for building competencies in the field of offshore drilling. The “heart” of the Center is a virtual professional complex of digital models of all technologies and equipment used on offshore drilling platforms. The virtual operation of the Center is provided by a control automation and information system.
In addition, the Center of Technical Qualifications was opened at the University. The Center is aimed at development and implementation of additional professional programs (advanced training, professional retraining). The Center is a unique corporate training center, the programs of which are aimed at comprehensive development of technical qualifications relevant in the industry. The first trainees of the Center started their training in 2020.

In 2013 the Center of Innovation Competencies was established based on the existing professional development units. Professional standards, customer requests for the development of specific professional (hard) and sociocultural (soft) competencies and skills are taken into account in designing professional development and professional retraining programs. The implementation of programs combines traditional and innovative educational technologies such as virtual industry environment and simulators.
From 1987 to 2019, over 250,000 managers and specialists of oil and gas enterprises of the USSR, the Russian Federation, and neighboring countries were trained.
